Considering Barb Styles

In medical devices, plastic components are ubiquitous for use in patient care, from heart and lung support, respiratory therapy, and surgery. With each application, a different component is required to serve a specific purpose to ensure the success of the procedure, functionality of the medical device, and overall safety of the patient.

At Injectech, we understand that a component supplier like us needs to provide trust, quality and expertise with our product line to match the needs of OEMs and end users alike. This variety applies to categories of plastic fittings such as luers, tube to tube connectors and check valves. One thing that requires consideration is the barb style of the product, which can have a direct impact on the success – or failure – of a product.

So, out of our range of barb styles, which one is right for you, and how do you choose?

Once you’ve determined the barb style that will be most effective for your project or assembly you should also determine the correct material. Some key things to consider are:

  • Regulatory requirements
  • Types of fluid/gas flowing through the system
  • Sterilization method
  • Tubing material
  • Chemical resistance
  • Our experienced technical team has a wealth of knowledge in this department, and is on hand to assist with selecting the best material for your application.

We use a single-barb design with no parting line on the sealing surface to allow for a more secure connection (see comparison below).

Bond in fittings – fittings that do not have a barb – are available to order as standard or custom, and contrastingly utilize a port design that is specific to the ID or OD of the selected tube with a bonding agent used to make the connection.

Now, with a better understanding of barb styles and differences in connection types, what is the final step in ensuring that you have the correct barb for your application?

Injectech offers free samples available to order via our website. Additionally, we have a range of sample kits that display a variety of connector variations – giving you the freedom to try multiple different options.
