Luer Locks vs. Slip Luers: What’s the Difference?

Published date: 14 Aug 2025

Luer fittings are integral components in the design and manufacture of medical and laboratory devices. These lightweight, cost-effective connectors ensure secure, leak-proof delivery of medications, solutions or gases through syringes, tubing and needles.

Let’s explore the two primary types:

Luer Locks

For enhanced security and pressure resistance, luer locks feature a threaded connection on both female and male components which prevents accidental disconnection. Offered in various barb styles; standard, high flow, and rigid
to suit different tubing durometers.

Sizes: 1/16" to 1/4"

Available materials include:

  • Radiation Stable Polycarbonate
  • Animal Derivative-Free Polypropylene
  • Kynar
  • ABS
  • Nylon

Slip Luers

Designed for quick, push-fit connections, slip luers rely on friction between opposing tapers to seal. Available as male and female connectors they are ideal for low-pressure applications such as priming or flushing.

Sizes: 1/16", 3/32", 1/8"

 Available materials include:
  • Lipid Resistant Radiation Stable Polycarbonate
